Although a formal education is not required, you will, of course, need to know how to draw. If you are a bit rusty or haven't drawn in a while, consider taking some art courses at a local community college.

During your courses, start putting together a portfolio of your drawings. Just like regular canvas artists, your portfolio is your calling card and your best marketing tool. You may want to even start a website where you can start posting your best drawings. If you are planning on starting your own studio, you will also need business cards and flyers.
The best way to learn is to train from an experienced tattoo artist, so go to local tattoo shops with your portfolio in hand. See if they are accepting apprentice workers. Some of these positions are unpaid, but there are some that are paid positions. It will likely depend on the studio.
Learn everything you possibly can during your apprenticeship. Keep up to date on new techniques and trends. When you feel you are ready, you can branch out on your own or go to a shop that is hiring paid artist.
